What is a Julienne Cut?
Julienne is a classic knife cut used to produce thin, even strips measuring about 5-6cm long and 2-3mm thick, often referred to as matchsticks. The Best Knife Types for Julienne Vegetables
Choosing the right knife type makes consistent cuts much easier.
The Chef’s Knife
The chef’s knife is the most preferred option for julienning larger vegetables such as carrots, courgettes and large potatoes. The razor-sharp edge on GLOBAL chef’s knives delivers clean, effortless slices with excellent control.
The Vegetable Knife
Designed specifically for vegetable preparation, Japanese vegetable knives like the nakiri offer exceptional precision when cutting to create a uniform, fine julienne. The flatter cutting edge means that the whole blade comes into contact with the cutting surface for an efficient cut.
The Santoku Knife
The santoku’s shorter blade and flatter cutting edge compared to a standard chef’s knife makes it ideal for fast, controlled vegetable slicing and everyday food preparation. The straighter blade creates perfectly even slices making it one of the best knives for julienne preparation.
