Why You Should Never Put a GLOBAL Knife in the Dishwasher

Picture it. You’ve cooked a delicious meal, prepped using your favourite GLOBAL knives and accessories. You sit to enjoy your tasty treats, feeling relaxed and ready for a chill evening.

Then you head back into the kitchen and see the mess in front of you. But it’s okay, just pop everything in the dishwasher, right?

Stop! Never put your GLOBAL knives in the dishwasher!

I get it. It’s so much simpler and quicker than handwashing. But using the dishwasher is the quickest way to damage your knives, vastly shortening their life span and making that lifetime guarantee null and void.

Here’s why:

Dishwasher Salts

Dishwasher detergents and salts contain sodium chloride. The chloride ions physically attack and destroy the protective chromium-oxide layer on the stainless steel. Once this layer is broken, the steel underneath is then exposed to moisture and oxygen. This then leads to rust, corrosion and pitting on a microscopic level.

Electrochemical Corrosion

As we all know, dishwashers use very high heats to help clean all the food and grime away from dirty dishes. All the different types of metals in the dishwasher (from the internal mechanism to the knives and cutlery you are cleaning) create a mini science experiment. Combined with the hot water and salts from the cleaning tablets a now highly conductive substance, the different metals act like batteries to each other and breakdown much quicker.

Damaged Edges

A simpler issue is that knives and can bump against the other utensils, plates, racks and cutlery in the dishwasher during the cleaning cycle. Even the harsh water pressure can cause the blade to rattle and roll against other utensils. This can result in tiny chips or dinks in the blade, making it much duller, must faster.

Unbalanced Handles

All GLOBAL knives feature a seamless, one-piece construction. The handles are hollow and filled with sand to balance the weight of the blade. However, the extreme heat from the dishwasher can cause the metal to expand, altering the interior balance and breaking the structural integrity of the handle.

So as the (basic) science suggests, putting your GLOBAL knife in the dishwasher not only damages the physical attributes of the whole knife from blade to handle, but also strictly voids the lifetime warranty.
